Greta Gerwig, the director of the upcoming Barbie film, revealed in an interview that she desired a vibrant and dazzling display of pink hues. She expressed her childhood love for the iconic Barbie color and insisted on recreating it in the movie. However, the ambitious endeavor led to an unexpected international crisis as the demand for Rosco's fluorescent pink paint skyrocketed, causing a shortage of the shade.
The responsibility of crafting the Barbie Dreamhouse fell on production designer Sarah Greenwood and decorator Katie Spencer. They dedicated themselves tirelessly to test over a hundred shades of pink to achieve the perfect "Barbie pink" requested by Gerwig. Their goal was to capture the authentic artificiality that has captivated us since childhood, from the costumes to the furniture and even the hand-painted backdrop, all drenched in the chosen color. Every corner of the set had to embrace the exaggerated world of the beloved doll. Greenwood emphasized the importance of tactility, as toys are, above all, things meant to be touched.
Joining the cast of Barbie are America Ferrera (Superstore), Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick... BOOM), Issa Rae (Insecure), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Emma Mackey (Sex Education), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Will Ferrell (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), Marisa Abela (Industry), Hari Nef (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Kingsley Ben-Adir (Secret Invasion), Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), Emerald Fennell (The Crown), and Simu Liu, recently seen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The Warner Bros. and Mattel collaboration will focus on the classic Barbie line, but little is known about the film's storyline. Greta Gerwig, acclaimed director of Lady Bird and Little Women, has been entrusted with bringing the Barbie film to life.
